By now the camera crews were told to shut down. Selahâs microphone was turned off. The broadcast had finished. Selah continued to speak though she now shouted to the assembly. The audience sat shocked but only the front rows could hear Selah.
âAs I mentioned, this was not the talk I was planning on giving here today. Revealing that I was once a boy is forbidden. There are no available figures on how many women there are like me in Havilah. There have been no studies on the psychological effects of being transgender, or what the decision not to go through such a change has on a young man. Even my co-workers have no idea that I once had a penis. The rhetoric that creates these circumstances is well known - to give a man an education is a waste of time and resources; they will only use their knowledge to cause division, to try and destroy the harmony of the Great Southern Land. But here I stand before you, a former boy, now a woman, who has contributed to medical science. Who has worked and researched and helped develop new ways of treating the mind and body. My work has been for the betterment of society. My genitals may have changed, but the mind, the brain that moves this body is still that of a male. And I am not someone scheming to work against the efforts of the Great Mothers.â
At that moment there were fem police storming the stage. The audience whispered and mumbled with frustration. Selah looked scared though she remained calm as she was escorted away from the cameras. An announcement overhead was made asking everyone to remain seated. They were told there had been issues with the live stream but a pre-recorded presentation on Second Skin and Communication was about to be aired.
âI canât believe how long it took to shut that tripe down!â Phoebe complained. âSomeone should have turned off the microphone the moment sheâ¦heâ¦announced himself on stage!â
âSince when do fake-fems get a say?â huffed Josephine angrily. âHave you ever seen anything like this Kennedy? And for all the world to see?â
But when she looked to see Kennedyâs reaction Josephine could tell the speech had upset the journalist deeply. âWhat is it?â the sprite asked.
Kennedy shook her head no, trying to hide heavy tears, âI need some spaceâ¦some air.â She waved Josephine away and rushed to the side exits for some privacy.
